Me and my Internet

Husband, Dad, Navy Officer, Coder, and Tinkerer. I have many interests and am always looking to learn something new. This site is a launching point to the many areas of the Internet that represent me.

  1. Diaper Allergies

Despite my best attempts … I am yet to convince Wife that I have an allergy to diapers. Where allergies and diapers do in fact overlap, though, is when it comes to changing the SUPER stinky ones.  Yup, quality wise we’re talking poop the consistency of oatmeal amply laced with honey.  It’s the kind that wafts while the diaper is still firmly secured.  Quantity wise we’re talking about when you can see the creep towards... 2. Man++ | New Grill

Stamp my “Man Card” … I now know how to cook on a charcoal grill! A few months back, my seven-year-old cheapo gas grill with rust and half disintegrated burgers stuck under the grate started shooting flames from the hose that leads to the propane tank. I put it out in the driveway with a sign that read “Free shoots flames from gas hose” but it was gone minutes later. Honestly I didn’t really miss... [read more]

  3. Real-time Dreaming

Do you dream in real-time? That is … chronological, one minute in dream world equals one minute passing in real world? I’m pretty sure you, and I as well, do not. “Jason … what’s your data?” Good question!  Let’s look at a very specific dream, the telephone ringing. In your dreams at night, if your phone rings, or your alarm clock rings, much of the time you will think that the phone is ringing in... [read more]

  4. YouTube.edu

Over the last few years, the quantity and quality of edutainment videos to hit the mainstream have gone through the roof!  PBS has always prided itself with kids shows that bring educational value in a entertaining manner, but nothing compares to what YouTube has brought to the masses. Many of my favorite YouTube channels teach me every day about Physics, Chemistry, how the world works, Politics, Governments and a very wide variety of levels.  Much... [read more]

  5. Afghanistan Memory Memorial and Air Force Band

Weeknights are generally fairly consistent around our house.  Home from work -> play with the kid -> dinner -> bath -> bed.  We had a nice change of pace yesterday, though. Over the weekend, read an article in the Navy Times about Ron White, who is a memory champion as well as a former Navy Reserve IS1 (Intelligence Specialist, First Class).  He has decided to pay his respects to the nearly 2,200 US Military members... 6. Book Review: Six Frigates

Wow … Six Frigates by Ian W. Toll was a marathon read.  And not like a sitting for 26 hours straight never wanting to put the book down.  More of the … took somewhere near 26 week sto read… Don’t get me wrong.  I thoroughly enjoyed the book and I learned A LOT from the 482 pages of riveting Navy history. It was just a long read.  And it read a bit like a text... [read more]

  7. Adventure on the way...

Have you seen the Canadian Space Agency channel on YouTube?  I’m a fan.  Chris Hadfield is an astronaut on the International Space Station and he does video blogging from the ISS.  Folks will write him asking questions about what life is like in space and he will video short few minute responses back.  Very interesting in fact! The video below is titled, “How you can achieve your goals”.  And the particular message of this video... [read more]

  8. Navy Interview: CDR Sean Heritage

[box color=”green”] [dropcap]I[/dropcap]n an attempt to not just answer my own curiosities, but to foster the beginnings of a discussion for more than myself, I have decided to start and share a new thread … Interviews with Navy Leadership. So much of what we do is based so much on perspective.  Certain people have certain experiences which give them certain perspectives on certain situations.  What I hope to gain from interviewing some of our Navy... 9. A History of the Navy in 100 Objects

In an apparent mirror off of BBC’s “History of the World in 100 Objects” (which I had never heard of previously), a now commissioned Naval Academy grad took a huge bite of initiative and is producing a podcast titled, “A History of the Navy in 100 Objects”. This is good stuff! I am about 50 pages away from finally finishing a book that I feel like I have spent half my life working through, “Six... [read more]

  10. Ted | Amanda Palmer: The art of asking

Making it through my Instapaper queue and came across a recent tweet that I had saved. I like Ted Talks.  They are typically personal and relatable.  Some person’s wisdom from experiences brought to the masses through story in a concise and well produced video. In this video, Amanda Palmer (a name that was previously unknown to me) talks about her struggle to fund her dream of making music full time.  Through this struggle, she learns... [read more]
