Me and my Internet

Husband, Dad, Navy Officer, Coder, and Tinkerer. I have many interests and am always looking to learn something new. This site is a launching point to the many areas of the Internet that represent me.

  1. My new friend, Rochester

Yesterday I was sitting at work doing the normal work, minding my own business when all of a sudden, Rochester brought himself into my life. I look down and what do I see, this itsy bitsy tiny little beetle bug crawling around between my iMac keyboard and my MacBook. At first he startled me! I didn’t know what to do with him, so I thought I would take a post it note and give him... [read more]

  2. How Many of Me?

I came across this neat little site, http://howmanyofme.com.  You can enter your first and last name, then it will tell you (somehow, I haven’t read the detail) how many people in the US have your first name, how many people in the US have your last name, and then how many people in the US have your first and last name.  It takes all of 10 seconds, but I think the results are fun to look... 3. Hungry Hungry Hippo (for dwarves)

I was browsing some funny pictures at http://www.eyepatchpirate.com and came across an article about a hippo who accidently ate a dwarf at a circus… umm… whoa (mixed with HAH).  I’m not sure what all there really is to say about this article other than, what a way to go…  Enjoy! 4. Ready, Set, Go! 5K Fun Run

It has been a while since I have run a race.  The last one was probably the Thanksgiving day Turkey Trot in Cincinnati.  But today was a whole lot of fun.  A quick little 5K, the First Annual Ready, Set Go! 5K Fun Run.  The race was held at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.  I had never been to that park before, but I will definitely try and go back at least a few... 5. Bad Advertising by Virgin America

Yes I realize that me writing a post on Virgin America (with links) just provides more free advertisement for them… but I have nothing against the company, just an ad I recently saw.  Virgin America actually is in good standing with me.  They sponsor one of my favorite podcasts, Diggnation. To the point though… one of their advertising ploys is showcasing the fact that every passenger has an individual outlet at their seat.  This is... [read more]

  6. Print Screen or Capture

One area that takes a little getting used to on a Mac is the process of doing a print screen. However, once you realize the process, you will forever love the Mac for it. On Windows machines, there is a button on the keyboard for print screen, and with some button combination I can not remember (shift?) you’ll only capture a windows. This is all possible and more (of course) on the Mac. I think... [read more]

  7. CLI System Profiler

The once upon a time Apple System Profiler, now just System Profiler is an amazing CLI (command line interface) tool.  If you need some quick information on your computer put into a shell script of some sort, parsing through System Profiler is a very easy way to do it.  For your initial reference, you can check the man pages on System Profiler by typing: man system_profiler This will give you all the details you’d want... 8. Google Notifier

Back in the days when I was a Windoze user shudders I would just keep a window of Gmail open, but minimized, so that I would know when I had a new message.  You see, Gmail puts how many unread messages you have in the title bar.  When I saw the light and switched over to a MacBook, I wasn’t able to do this anymore. This is when I discovered the Google Notifiers. The two... [read more]

  9. Everything! Under Six Clicks Away...

Everyone it seems at some point or another… in some form or fashion… has heard of Kevin Bacon’s 6-degrees. If you haven’t… let me give you a quick catch up: Basically every thing and everyone (in this case actors and Kevin Bacon) can be related within six degrees of separation. Let’s take for example my friend Sean’s, friend Billy’s, friend Thomas. Thomas and I have 2 degrees of separation… Sean and Billy. Well, today there... [read more]

  10. This I Believe - What is the Value of a Human Life?

I always enjoy listening to the This I Believe podcasts. Today’s was an especially thought provoking episode. In it, Washington attorney Kenneth Feinberg talks about his job past and present of putting a value on a human life. After September 11th, his daunting task was to give a ‘fair’ monetary coverage to the families of those who’s lives were lost.
