The Pledge of Allegiance

Recently, I was forwarded a video of Red Skelton’s “Pledge of Allegiance” short.

I remember back to my days as a cub scout, one of the tasks (were they called merit points or something of the likes?) in our book was to discuss the meaning of our Pledge of Allegiance with an adult.  I can still remember talking with my Dad about our Pledge.  I don’t remember the exact conversation we had, but I can still picture being on the patio outside our basement walkout door.  Dad was doing some yard work of some sort, and I was going word by word through the pledge discussing what each word meant to me.

After watching the Red Skelton video, I thought about the discussion that has been had for years about not saying our Pledge at the beginning of school, or rather removing the words “under God” from our Pledge.  I do not know what they do in schools now-a-days, but I know we said our Pledge each and every morning while I was in elementary school.  The words were repetitive and I don’t think I ever truly grasped what they meant, but I was young, I didn’t need to understand it completely.

By doing repeated processes while we are younger, we remember.  I don’t know if I remember a specific instance of saying our Pledge of Allegiance when I was in the Fourth grade room of Mrs. Kays.  But I do know that I can picture standing there, looking at our flag and saying those words:

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America.  And to the Republic, for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

I’m not sure there is really a point to this post.  More of a reflection for my own benefit.  Below is a copy of the Red Skelton short.
